One of the common fights fought in the colosseum in ancient Rome was between a bear and a lion. The romans would import lions from Africa and Brown bears from northern Europe and make them fight for their amusement.
It wasn’t a great sport for betting though – the bears always won. Brown bears are big and very strong and a lion has a very fragile skeleton. A bear can easily smash a lion’s skull (or a persons) and so the bear would win.
I reckon there aren’t many land animals that could take a Polar Bear so I’d go for that.
In the oceans though, the ultimate top predator is probably the Orca.
So the showdown is an Orca vs. a Polar Bear – this is very silly because orcas can’t move on land and polar bears, although they can swim well, would still be hugely disadvantaged in a fight in the sea
If I had to pick a land animal, I would go for the elephant. I think an elephant would beat your polar bear, James – but I guess we won’t be able to find out! 😉
If I had to pick a marine animal, I would go for the blue whale just because of its sheer size. I think it would be pretty hard for anything to bring down a blue whale.
