  This is actually a conspiracy theory. The TV channel Animal Planet made a ‘mockumentary’ (a fake documentary) about a supposed cover up of a mermaid that was discovered off the coast of Washington State.

  The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the USA (equivalent of our MET office and National Oceanography Centre) issued an official statement stating that this is a hoax. Nobody, as far as I know, has ever discovered a mermaid.
  
  Mermaids are mythological half-human, half-fish creatures but fish and humans are separated by over 300 million years of evolution. If a human sea creature were to exist, it would most likely to be more similar to a sea lion or a walrus and a popular theory about mermaid sightings is that sailors mistook walruses and sea lions for mermaids
