Most research cruises are somewhere between 3 to 8 weeks for deep-sea biologists. Very occasionally they’ll be a bit shorter.
Depends on the kind of field work you do, if you want to look at a place regularly over a long period of time you might be away for 6 months or even a year!
Yeah I do, it can be hard being away but for the kind of science I’m involved in, it’s pretty much unavoidable. At least when I’m on field work I’m usually really busy so the time goes quick. That’s a good question though and you’re quite right. I try not to be away for too long but when you’re at sea, you can’t get off until the boat comes back so it’s out of my hands a bit (but I can choose to do shorter cruises usually)
