I think zebras are white, with black stripes because often the black stripes don’t meet in the middle and they have white stomachs!

Different zebra species have different stripe patterns though – some species will have thicker black stripes than others so it’s easy to argue both ways

Zebras actually have black skin. (http://animals.howstuffworks.com/mammals/zebra-stripes1.htm)
The stripes are formed by areas of white and black hair on that black background.

Each individual zebra has a unique pattern of stripes, much like a human fingerprint.

There are three species of zebras and their colouration differs a bit, but if I had to pick one of those two options I would say that they are white with black stripes because some of them have a lot of white on their bellies or on their legs.
